From 8-Inch to 3.5
The floppy shrank from 8 inches, to 5.25, to the rigid 3.5-inch shell that outlived them all. Capacity crept from a few hundred kilobytes to a “high density” 1.44 MB — a figure burned into the memory of anyone who ever shipped software in a cardboard box.
Its greatest legacy is a glyph: the save icon. Millions of people tap a picture of a device they have never physically held. The medium is dead; its silhouette is immortal.
